ep. 67 - How to Batch Your Podcast Episodes

Pretend with me that you are standing in front of the Subway sandwich counter. The smell of bread washes over you and you start your order. You say white bread, with turkey, oh yeah, and provolone cheese, and as you start sharing what sandwich toppings you want, the Subway employee stops you….she asks what kind of bread you want for your 2nd sandwich…

I look at her in confusion…I’ve been going to Subway since I was a teenager…you would think I would KNOW HOW THIS WORKS!!! LOL. I tell her ‘wheat’. She then puts cheese and the meat I want on the bread.

THEN she moves back to the first sandwich and says…what would you like on your turkey on white? I tell her lettuce, green peppers, pickles, mayo, salt, and pepper. She goes on to my turkey on wheat and asks what I want on THAT sandwich…

Subway uses a concept called batching. They have one person who starts building the sandwich, beginning with choosing the bread, then toasting it, adding the cheese, and finally, the meat. Then the second employee puts on toppings, and the 3rd employee rings them up on the cash register.

Batching is defined as: “arranging things in sets or groups” - and we can do it with our podcast!

If you consider my Subway worker’s case, you bullet point your episode, you write the content using those bullet points, you create the title, you record it, you edit it, you upload it, and you create graphics for it.

Kissflow.com has done research that says, “…the average employee is productive for only two hours and 53 minutes per day.”
But it is possible to boost focus and productivity by completing clusters of similar tasks all at once instead of tackling them individually. That’s the basis of the productivity method called task batching, a strategy related to time-block planning.
And the brilliance of task batching lies in its obvious simplicity.

So today, I'm going to share with you the 7 steps to batching your podcast episode for the month, so that you can save time and become a more efficient, more-productive podcaster!
