Overcoming Filler Words on your Podcast with Speaking Guru Karen Laos

FILLER WORDS

We start at the very beginning…a very good place to start!

Karen defines a filler word as something that is repetitively said and it becomes a distraction. We say filler words because we are in the habit of doing so!

Um, ah, you know, basically, literally, totally….those are a few! And, if you are like me…you found yourself in some of those (totally, so are my go to’s..lol)

WAYS TO ELIMINATE SPEAKING FILLER WORDS IN YOUR PODCAST

  1. Start to notice your patterns -self awareness

  2. Record yourself and listen back

  3. Silence is best, practice that

  4. Get an outside observer (one or two trusted individuals) to speak the truth in love

  5. See the reality.

When we speak—we are also punctuating.

MINDSET:

Many of us self sabotage ourselves. Karen shared a story of a client who shared that there are going to be so many um’s in the video. She shares that stating affirmations in a positive way can combat against our self sabotage in the area of filler words. Replace your negative “I always have too many um’s” to “I speak with confidence and clarity.” Say the positive thing you want to do.

There is power in our words.

Karen mentions that there is research that states that when you say verbal affirmations 7x’s in the morning and 7x’s in the evening (especially) it will solidify it. SO COOL!!

“If we don’t believe in yourself, who will?”

Karen mentions having portable confidence. If you are confident in a certain sport or confident in something else, bring that confidence into your speaking on your podcast. It’s portable! I loved this phrase!!!

There are many other ways to reframe our minds for a more confident mindset.

Making your body bigger by practicing the Wonder Woman pose!

ENCOURAGEMENT:

We aren’t here to just fix how we speak…we are elevating it. If you desire to be better at your craft that is why we work on replacing filler words, so we can speak with confidence, credibility and effectiveness.

“Eliminate the thing the is getting in the way. When you are speaking, it’s not good or bad, it’s what’s effective.”

Just remember that you have a story to tell and the world needs to hear it!

You have a story to tell and the world needs to hear it!
