ep. 58 - Why Servant Leadership Matters in Your Business

Mixing Faith & Business

I was recently talking with an in real life friend and business owner about how much we talk about our faith in our business. She hasn’t shared a lot about her faith in her business. I shared with her that there are business owners who are Christians and there are Christian business owners. Neither one is the right choice, it’s just a different way of looking at it. Obviously if you are a believer in Jesus, your light and joy will shine through you in your business dealings.

You may wonder how you can mix faith and business. Can it be separate or is our faith infused into everything we do as Christians who are also business owners? Or maybe the questions is is our faith infused into everything we do as business owners since we are Christians? I love thinking about this question and would love for you to ask yourself this question as well.

What do you know about podcasting that you wish you knew earlier?

I get asked “What is the one thing that you would tell me about podcasting that you wish you knew earlier?” And, I tell them, “It's not about you.” But this is really a statement I feel about our businesses as Christians. It’s not about us.

If you want your life to be significant, then you have to recognize that it's all about God, not about you. Ken Blanchard’s quote in his book, Lead Like Jesus, “we try to make God the servant, we become the leader and things don't work out.”

You will hear on the episode how I chose to do a second devotional, Instead of the first one that God had given me. And, when I did that, I chose to edge God out. I chose to put my ego first, and that is not being a servant leader. As Ken Blanchard says, “when we become the leader, but it doesn't work out. Our ego gets in the way. We edge God out.” If you want your life to be significant, then you have to recognize that it's all about God and not about you.

Here are three ways that you can exhibit, that WE can exhibit servant leadership in our businesses as Christian Business Owners

1) Ask God to show you who you serve and how you can serve them. If we don't know who we're serving or if we don't know how we can serve them, we don't, we can't...when you try to serve everyone, you serve no one. And so you have to know who you're serving.

2) Number two, understand that it's not about you.

And take that extra step. You can understand it's not about you, but the number two is to surrender to God your business. Surrender to God your business and have open palms. Say, "God, what do you want to have for my business today? What do you want to have through me, in and through me today?"

and on episode 53, www.wrenrobbins.com/dontwingit/53 I talk about what every business owner needs to know. And part of that is the palms up, but it's an episode that you need to tune into. I had really good feedback from that and it's not because of me, it's because God gave me that word and it was a word for you and it was a word for business owners.
